Foraging for Fiber - Knitty Gritty Yarn Shop

Image
This picture is from their Facebook.  For this foraging spotlight, I wanted to highlight a LYS in my wonderful little town of Lebanon, OR – Knitty Gritty Yarn.  The owner, Mo is genuinely a fiber enthusiast. She is a budget-conscious lady who has yarn available for all price points without sacrificing the yarn's quality. The tool selection is robust, and you will find that Mo has stocked Chiaogoo interchangeables, fixed needles, and the minis. If you need help selecting the right tools, she is very knowledgeable on what would work best.  Pre-COVID Mo had many classes available through her shop. Again, since she is a fiber enthusiast, she had classes ranging from beginner classes, advanced classes, and even some dying/yarn spinning options. At the time that I spoke to her, she was thinking about having some dying fiber workshops. Still, since she did not have classes available, she was gracious enough to give me some tips and tricks, and she even sold me some of her...

Tool Cool Not to Share: the "knit pod" by M. Worthington

Image
I have never been someone that oohs and ahhh over kitchen gadgets. I'm usually a "fuck it we'll do it live" kind of gal. I've been known to open up cans the traditional way, with a knife. And I occasionally dabble in the art of opening an avocado without a multi-tool. I know, reckless.  But when it comes to knitting I am the complete opposite. Though I still use yarn to hold live stitches, I fuck with gadgets all the time.  One of the most recent gadgets was this knitting pod that I bought from Starlight Knitting Society. It is made out of maple and black walnut. It was hand turned by a local artist "M. Worthington" and it is super cool.  I mean sure, you can use the needle stoppers, but this pod will help store your needles in a sturdy little case. You can drop it in your project bag and you won't have to worry about the stoppers falling off. Also the top screws on so it is very secure. The artist did a great job sanding the inside and the outside s...

Rubber Neckin' in the Fiber Community: A Quick Summary of the Dumpster Fires That May Be Causing That Pain on Your Neck.

Image
The fiber community has seen its fair share of dumpster fires. We have seen scandals come and go. And even if you don’t want to admit it, we know that you or someone you know has been a keyboard warrior at one time another—the warrior who ‘speaks up’ in the face of injustice.  There are specific topics, attitudes, and general asshattery that makes this community rise up. So here I am to give you a summary of dumpster fire causing topics that make all of us rubberneck. It’s the type of junk that makes us suit up to prepare for a cyberwar of words.  1. The ‘woke’ knitter who calls out indie dyers, designers, and influencers only to find out that they are sleepin’ at the wheel.  These folks certainly make us clutch our pearls every once in a while when they dare share their inner thoughts with us. They are the ones who call out designers for taking a stance against racism. They are the ones who think they are helping you navigate the tricky waters of today’s economy and soci...
